Scalp safety

Some scalp concerns need more than a hair product

Our website recommends ordinary cosmetic hair products. It cannot examine your scalp, diagnose a condition, or recommend treatment for a medical problem.

When to seek professional advice

Speak to a GP if you have persistent or severe scalp itching, a swollen or very irritated scalp, painful or open sores, unexplained hair loss or new bald patches, or flaking that does not improve with appropriate self-care. A pharmacist can advise on common dandruff and whether you should see a GP.

Hair loss can have several causes. It is worth finding out what is happening before choosing products advertised as hair-growth treatments.

If symptoms are getting worse quickly

If your scalp or skin becomes painful, hot and swollen, seek an urgent GP appointment or help from NHS 111 (England, opens in a new tab). If you are seriously unwell, seek emergency medical help.

Can I still look for haircare products?

Yes. You can browse ordinary shampoos, conditioners and styling products for cosmetic use. But their inclusion in the finder does not mean they will treat scalp symptoms or hair loss. We have intentionally not launched a scalp-treatment matcher.
